Job description

Wireless Mobile networks are key enablers of our digital society, supporting all sectors, ranging from social media to industry, logistics, and healthcare. To handle the continuous exponential growth in data traffic combined with increasing requirements on latency, 6G mobile wireless networks and their devices are planned for deployment from 2030 onwards.

This Ph.D. project targets an advanced, fully integrated digital transmitter (DTX) for 6G mobile communication networks operating in the urban extreme capacity 7-to-20GHz band. The project focuses on identifying new DTX architectures that meet the stringent requirements on operating frequency, bandwidth, spectral purity, and RF output power of the 6G standard. Moreover, this Ph.D. project will pioneer novel dual-polarized single-chip CMOS/SOI DTX concepts to be used in future “extreme massive multiple-input multiple-output wireless systems” (XMIMO). Some envisioned features of the targeted 6G DTX are high-spectral purity,  high system efficiency, and load resilience while meeting the RF power requirements. You will work in the ELCA research group of the TU Delft and will be guided by Dr. Morteza Alavi and Prof. Leo de Vreede. For your design, you will make use of state-of-the-art semiconductor technologies.

The student must have

  1. already received his/her master of science,
  2. knowledge of RF, mixed-signal, digital design,
  3. experience with ADS and Cadence,
  4. interested in this position.

Placement: Under ELCA group staff members, Department of Microelectronics, Faculty of EEMCS, TU Delft.

Qualifications: Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or related field. Experience in telecommunications and signal processing is beneficial. Strong circuit and system design skills and fluency in English are required.

Department

Faculty Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science

The Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Science (EEMCS) brings together three scientific disciplines. Combined, they reinforce each other and are the driving force behind the technology we all use in our daily lives. Technology such as the electricity grid, which our faculty is helping to make completely sustainable and future-proof. At the same time, we are developing the chips and sensors of the future, whilst also setting the foundations for the software technologies to run on this new generation of equipment – which of course includes AI. Meanwhile we are pushing the limits of applied mathematics, for example mapping out disease processes using single cell data, and using mathematics to simulate gigantic ash plumes after a volcanic eruption. In other words: there is plenty of room at the faculty for ground-breaking research. We educate innovative engineers and have excellent labs and facilities that underline our strong international position. In total, more than 1000 employees and 4,000 students work and study in this innovative environment.
