In the Neural Interfacing Lab (https://neuralinterfacinglab.github.io/), we build Brain-Computer Interfaces that restore communication and movement. For this purpose, we utilize invasive recordings and build machine learning models that are trained for each participant individually.

In this project, we want to make this process more clinically viable. To achieve this, you will tackle two aspects of invasive BCIs:

1. Harness recent development in deep learning and neural manifolds to create models that use data from our large existing corpus of invasive recordings instead of training person dependent models each time;
2. Increase robustness and usability of our existing BCI pipelines to make them less dependent on researcher interaction and potentially even allow patients to train their own system.

You will be part of the Neural Interfacing Lab at Maastricht University, and contributing to fundamental and applied research in the field of Brain-Computer Interfacing, thereby working closely with the principal investigators (Christian Herff - neural engineer and Pieter Kubben - neurosurgeon). In addition to the outlined technical challenges, you will work closely with patients to test your models and record data. This work is performed as a part of the INTENSE project (https://intenseproject.eu).

The ideal candidate:

• Strong technical background demonstrated by a master in Computer Science, electrical engineering, biomedical engineering/science, computational neuroscience or similar
• Strong programming skills (we use Python)
• Good scientific writing skills
• Interest in working with patients
• Team player
• Fluent in both Dutch and English language
• Driving license

As PhD-candidate at Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:

The position is graded in scale P according to UFO profile Promovendus, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €2770,00 and €3539,00 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). • An employment contract for a period of 12 months with a scope of 1,0 FTE. Upon a positive evaluation, an extension of 3 years will follow.
