Job description

The aim of this postdoc position is to synthesize the lessons of three pioneering projects in Amsterdam, Delft and Maastricht in the field of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design. By comparing and contrasting, you will integrate the lessons, produce new knowledge and build an overarching approach. You will be part of a team of PhD students, Postdocs and tenured staff in the three projects. You will study the tensions between safety, sustainability and circularity values and how these tensions can be addressed. You will analyse the uncertainties and the responsibilities in decision-making. You will develop novel insights, useful approaches and policy recommendations. We ask you to:
  • Integrate insights about safety, sustainability and circularity;
  • Investigate the ecosystems of actor and their interdependencies;
  • Study the dynamics of decision making;
  • Compare the findings with lessons elsewhere;
  • Develop an overall approach of Safe-and-Sustainable-by-Design;
  • Contribute to a productive team effort.

Requirements

You have experience in researching the interface of industrial production and societal challenges. You are able to connect academic understanding with practical guidelines. You are interested in collaborative research that transcends disciplinary boundaries. We expect you to have:
  • PhD in social studies of science and technology (STS), Innovation Studies or similar;
  • Proven interest in industrial dynamics;
  • Good writing skills;
  • Sensibility for policy relevance;
  • Interest in working in a team;
  • A good command of English and preferably some understanding of Dutch.

What we offer

As Postdoc at the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, you will be employed by the most international university in the Netherlands, located in the beautiful city of Maastricht. In addition, we offer you:
  • Good employment conditions. The position is graded in scale 11 according to UFO profile Postdoc, function level 3, with corresponding salary based on experience ranging from €4,332 and €5,929 gross per month (based on a full-time employment of 38 hours per week). In addition to the monthly salary, an 8.0% holiday allowance and an 8.3% year-end bonus apply.
  • An employment contract for a period of 27 months with a scope of 1.0 FTE.
  • At Maastricht University, the well-being of our employees is of utmost importance, we offer flexible working hours and the possibility to work partly from home if the nature of your position allows it. You will receive a monthly commuting and internet allowance for this. If you work full-time, you will be entitled to 29 vacation days and 4 additional public holidays per year, namely carnival Monday, carnival Tuesday, Good Friday, and Liberation Day. If you choose to accumulate compensation hours, an additional 12 days will be added. Furthermore, you can personalize your employment conditions through a collective labor agreement (CAO) choice model.

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences

The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences FASoS is a close-knit community of approximately 250 staff members and 2100 students. During breaks and before meetings, you can often find us at our favourite local coffee spot Bandito Espresso.
