Job description

Are you interested in unraveling the underlying mechanisms causing leukemia and keen to further develop our understanding of leukemia biology in order to ultimately improve patient care? We currently have a PhD position available at the Department of Hematology in the UMCG, focusing on the molecular mechanisms in nucleophosmin (NPM1) mutated acute myeloid leukemia.

The current project is funded by the Dutch Cancer Society and aims to dissect the pathogenesis of NPM1-mutated AML, in order to ultimately improve therapy. NPM1 is one of the most frequently
mutated gene in AML. While the clinical relevance of NPM1 mutations in AML is well established, the biological mechanisms by which NPM1 mutations exert their oncogenic functions are poorly understood. We will investigate the effect of NPM1 mutations on the process of protein translation, using polysome profiling studies and RNA sequencing. Further, altered nuclear transport processes and protein quality control mechanisms in NPM1 mutated AML will be subject to our investigations, using patient-derived AML cell cultures and detailed molecular studies.
