Job description

Environment

JADS Den Bosch closely collaborates with both Eindhoven University of technology and Tilburg University. This unique collaboration enables a true interdisciplinary approach building on deep technological and engineering knowledge combined with leading humanities and social sciences.

In this joint appointment (e.g. 0.8 at JADS in Den Bosch and 0.2 at TU/e ITEM group in Eindhoven) you will connect to several groups at both Eindhoven University of technology and Tilburg University and strive to combine their strengths in setting up large scale research programs and educational programs. The department at Tilburg University you closely collaborate with is the Strategy and Entrepreneurship | Tilburg University group. Depending on your profile, a 0.8 at JADS in Den Bosch and 0.2 at this group can also be considered. Combined with the strong entrepreneurial ecosystem of the Netherlands, the province of Brabant, the Brainport area, Tilburg and Den Bosch Innovation Quarter (an new area under development focusing entirely on Data Driven Businesses) offer opportunities to initiate new interdisciplinary research collaborations. JADS also has its own incubator, the Playground (JADS Playground - JADS), which is connected to a network of similar accelerators adding to the vibrant startup climate.

JADS

We do cool stuff that matters, with data. The Jheronimus Academy of Data Science (JADS) is the joint Data Science Academy of Tilburg University and Eindhoven University of technology. JADS Mariënburg is located in Den Bosch and currently has 40 FTE scientific faculty and support staff, 35 EngD and 40 PhD students and has been growing substantially in its research portfolio. As a young institution we are looking for excellent researchers with a can-do mentality who are team players and are willing to connect to other fields. Our researchers have a strong background in quantitative and statistical methods, data science and computer science.

The Data Entrepreneurship unit

The research department of JADS consists of three units: Data Governance (DG), Data Analytics (DA) and Data Entrepreneurship (DE). We are looking for an Associate Professor in Data-Driven Entrepreneurship for the Data Entrepreneurship unit. The Data Entrepreneurship unit focuses on how data can be used to create and capture value for business and society. It combines Data Science and Entrepreneurship/Business.

Responsibilities
  • Lead the Data Entrepreneurship unit that is positioned within the JADS Research Department.
  • Initiating, supervising and conducting research on data-driven entrepreneurship, business models, and ecosystems.
  • Acquiring external funding for research projects (e.g. second and third money streams).
  • Supervising PhD, EngD, MSc and BSc projects in this area.
  • Designing, coordinating and teaching courses at BSc, MSc, PhD and EngD levels.
  • Participating in committees at the intra- and inter-departmental levels.
  • Contributing to the management of JADS.

Key themes

In this role you will focus on how data can be used to create and capture value for business and society and contribute to three key themes in the field.
  1. Implications of big data and AI for business: the study of business performance implications of (big) data and AI and potential trade-offs among performance indicators and to understand how value is distributed among different actors.
  2. Data science and AI methods in entrepreneurship research: research into how to make data collections more scalable and less intrusive, which in turn provide deeper/broader empirical findings and inform interventions more extensively
  3. Data-driven decision making tools: how to ensure that the DS/AI solutions are fully embedded in the organizational process and there is an ongoing link between the models and decision-makers. In short, ensure the DS solution solves the right problems.
