The Cultural Studies capacity group is looking for a candidate to teach in the minor Fashion Studies that is part of the Cultural Studies BA programme. The candidate can also be asked to teach courses in the Global Arts, Culture and Politics BA as well as, possibly, in the MA programme on Arts, Culture and Politics. The candidate has broad expertise in fashion theory and/or history, with a focus on the politics and globalization of fashion. They draw on interdisciplinary approaches from one or more of the following fields: cultural studies, anthropology, cultural sociology, visual and material culture.

What are you going to do?
Your main task will be to coordinate the minor Fashion Studies and teach within it in courses such as Fashion, Global Cultures and Politics, and Fashion in Museums. You will teach a curriculum that has already been developed, but you will also be asked to contribute to further improve and innovate education in the minor. You will also be asked to teach related subjects in the Global Arts, Culture and Politics BA as well as, likely, the MA in Arts, Culture and Politics. You will work with an interdisciplinary team of teachers to offer inspiring lectures and seminars to a diverse cohort of students. You will also supervise BA and possibly MA theses too.

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • teaching;
  • supervising Bachelor’s and possibly also Master’s theses;
  • contributing to the improvement of education and identifying opportunities for improvement;
  • making contributions to the development and implementation of improvements in didactics and/or content of the designated curriculum;
  • staying up to date with the professional literature and integrating new research insights in teaching the designated curriculum;
  • performing coordination duties;
  • participating in committees and working groups and performing administrative duties related to the minor.

Requirements

You are flexible, creative and proactive with a passion for teaching. You are open to working in an interdisciplinary, multilingual, inclusive team of teachers committed to educational innovation. You are engaged with fashion theory and/or history, drawing on approaches from anthropology, cultural studies, cultural sociology, or material and visual culture. You have a focus on the politics and globalization of fashion. Knowledge of and affinity with the history and practice of collecting and presenting fashion in museums is a plus.

We will prioritize candidates who hold a PhD (completed or very near completion); however, we will consider candidates with relevant teaching experience without a PhD.

Your experience and profile
  • PhD on a fashion-related topic in an interdisciplinary field of the arts, humanities and social sciences;
  • experience with teaching in BA programmes at an academic level;
  • experience with digital and audio-visual equipment;
  • affinity with IT in academic education;
  • team spirit and a willingness to participate in activities of the Cultural Studies group;
  • willing and able to cooperate in multidisciplinary, multilingual projects;
  • coordinating skills;
  • a University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained a UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the qualification within three years of employment;
  • good command of Dutch and English. If you do not speak Dutch, an active and passive command must be acquired within the first two years of employment and the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II must be passed.

Conditions of employment

We offer permanent employment upon a satisfactory evaluation following a temporary employment contract of a maximum of 12 months with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30,4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 4,332 to € 5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.
