What you will do
As Research Project Manager you support researchers with the coordination and management of various, often complex, collaborative research projects with multiple stakeholders. You take the lead in the non-scientific work of research projects. You are responsible for planning, organising and managing several national (e.g. Nationaal Groeifonds), international (e.g. EU Horizon Europe) or interdisciplinary research projects.
  • You work at the project locations in the faculties and institutes, in close collaboration with the Principal Investigators.
  • You organise and plan the execution of projects, arrange project meetings and organise events.
  • You administer, monitor and report progress and budget, ensuring compliance with the funding agency requirements, agreed contracts and EU policies.
  • You assist with all aspects of the projects’ contractual documentation, including change requests, amendments, and to draft other agreements as required.
  • You are responsible for maintaining relationships with consortium partners, funders and other research support professionals in Leiden and ensure that all project partners remain involved throughout the project.

What you bring
In this team, we are looking for someone who can work independently. Every job is different, so in the beginning we will devote attention to your onboarding. If some of the work activities are new to you, we will look together at what you need, and draw up a development plan. This position is a good fit for you if you recognise yourself in the following:

You are enterprising, service-oriented and able to establish and maintain interpersonal relationships. You feel comfortable in the role of coordinator and sparring partner for (a diverse group of) senior researchers. With your analytical mindset, you are able to quickly assess what is going on. You have a strong sense of responsibility and a result-oriented attitude. Your way of communicating is clear and easy and you are not deterred by deadlines.

In addition, you have:
  • A Master or PhD degree;
  • Knowledge of externally funded research projects and the international funding landscape, including the field of financial and legal aspects of EU Horizon Europe and other European and Dutch funding opportunities;
  • Experience with project management of complex international research and innovation projects;
  • An excellent command of both the Dutch and English language, both verbally and in writing.

  • An employment contract for the duration of one year with a view to permanent employment, depending on the performance and the available budget. This contract falls under the CLA of Dutch Universities;
  • A salary of a minimum of €4,332 and a maximum of €5,929 gross per month, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours) (scale 11);
  • A holiday allowance (8%), an end-of-year bonus (8,3%), and an attractive pension scheme at ABP;
  • Flexible working hours: as a standard, you are entitled to a minimum of 29 leave days on the basis of a full-time working week of 38 hours; you can also save for extra leave, for example by working 40 hours a week, and in this way accrue an extra 96 leave hours, or exchange 96 leave hours for a 36-hour week;
  • Lots of options when it comes to secondary employment conditions; we can, for example, discuss options for a sabbatical or paid parental leave. Within our terms of employment individual choices model, you can exchange leave days and/or salary for benefits such as an advantageous sports subscription or bicycle scheme, and we also offer child-care options;
  • If your work allows it, hybrid working is possible within the Netherlands;
  • A home-working allowance (day and internet allowance) and attention for good workplaces. The University will also provide you with a laptop and a mobile telephone.

You will be working from a new pool of dedicated project managers at LURIS, our Knowledge Exchange Office. With this pool of research project managers, we are helping researchers to plan, organise and manage complex or interdisciplinary research projects, in particular in EU Horizon Europe projects and complex national projects, including those of the Nationaal Groeifonds. You are part of the active and lively Leiden Research Support Network, the community of research project managers and of course the LURIS team.
