Job description

The Hubrecht Sustainable Research Officer will be tasked with designing a comprehensive sustainability plan for the laboratory activities of the institute with short- and long-term goals, grounded in analytics, that can achieve the envisioned degree of CO2 reduction, and reduce resource use and costs.

Task include:
  • Coordinate efforts to estimate carbon footprints of a wide range of research activities at the institute, and investigate potential ways to reduce those footprints
  • Together with facility heads and the board design an ambitious plan to reduce our institute’s research carbon footprint
  • Pro-actively connect with the relevant local (USP), national and international community to learn about best practices in sustainability in lab environments
  • Initiate and manage green science projects, challenges and campaigns within the Institute
  • Represent the Hubrecht and take active part in wider green science community at the USP and in the Netherlands (e.g. as contact person for Green labs NL)
  • Chair the Hubrecht Green Team
  • Coordinate the LEAF-program for sustainable science in the Hubrecht
  • Be the central point for green science communication
  • Systematically review set goals for sustainable research with the board and sharpen goals based on new insights and developments

Requirements

The ideal candidate:
  • Is passionate about sustainability and has experience in leading sustainability programs
  • Preferably has experience with research lab environments
  • Has a constructive attitude: listens to opinions and ideas of internal and external parties and aims to get everyone on board with sustainable science goals and actions
  • Has an analytical mind to critically review numbers and datasets
  • Has demonstrable project management skills
  • Can communicate well

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

Depending on education and experience the minimum salary is € and the maximum salary is € gross per month for a full-time appointment (scale cao Nederlandse Universiteiten/KNAW). This is exclusive of 8% vacation allowance, 8.3% year-end bonus, travel allowance, internet allowance, home working allowance and pension accrual with ABP.
