Job description

The Amsterdam Business School (ABS) is part of the University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Economics and Business. ABS Master in Business Administration was ranked #1 in 2016 and the school is internationally recognised triple-crown accredited. It has around 3,000 full-time students and 120 FTE academic staff. One of the school’s core focus areas is the application of Data Science in all areas of business studies: Marketing, Finance, Operations Management, HR, Accounting and Strategy.

All first-year students will be following the Skills & Connect tutorials in periods 1,2 and 4. Period 1 and 2 (12 classes in total) is focused on helping students acquire the right study methods, getting the right attitude towards their studies. The tutor will teach different methods to approach the study material and help students to set goals and reflect on them.

Next to that, the tutor is a social mentor for first-year students and helps them find their place within university. This includes organizing social events (during class hours) and sharing information and tips on how to choose your study program and how to handle the study in general. In period 4, the tutor will teach professional skills to first-year students: Excel skills (3 classes) and presentation skills (3 classes).

Tasks and responsibilities:
  • Teach three groups of approximately 20 students (per week);
  • prepare classes and grade assignments;
  • attend regular training sessions and meetings.

Requirements

  • By September 2024: You are a second-, third-year or master student at the Faculty of Economics & Business (candidates who have a PhD or are in the process of doing a PhD are not eligible for this position);
    • We also accept applications from other studies (e.g., psychology, PPLE, sociology, communication science) to make the tutoring team more diverse;
  • you have at least 60 ECTS when starting this job;
    • NB: You can apply for this vacancy as a first-year student, but you must have passed are courses in your first year up until now
  • you are fluent in either Dutch or English (or both);
  • people can rely on you, and you are able to be role model for others;
  • you are empathic and are interested in others, specifically in students;
  • you think it is challenging and fun to teach others;
  • you have a positive mindset: you believe that everyone has the potential to develop;
  • you can reflect on your own strength and weaknesses, and you can deal with feedback;
  • you have a flexible schedule;
  • you are available from 21 August 2024 onwards (on this day, the first training day will take place);
  • you will receive 7 hours per week between 19 August 2024 – 30 March 2025 (these hours cover: teaching 3 groups in period 1,2 & 4, grading, training, meetings, resit grading).

Conditions of employment

The contract is via StudiJob from 19 August 2024 until 30 March 2025. An extension of the contract is possible. It might be possible to teach more than 3 groups (then your weekly hours to declare will be: 8.7 hour per week). Also, there is a possibility to keep teaching in the following academic year.

The gross monthly salary based on full-time employment (38 hours per week) ranges from € 2,618 up to a maximum of € 2,846 (salary scale student-assistant). This is exclusive 8% holiday allowance. The starting salary will be based on number of ECTS gained as a student. The profile is applicable in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.
