Job description

We are looking for an enthusiast postdoctoral researcher to work on an exciting project on the science of Hybrid Intelligence!

Your job
You will work on a new project on Hybrid Intelligence, which is funded by a 10-year Gravitation Grant from the Dutch Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. It brings together many prominent AI researchers in the Netherlands. Hybrid Intelligence (HI) is the combination of human and machine intelligence, expanding human intellect instead of replacing it. HI takes human expertise and intentionality into account when making meaningful decisions and performing appropriate actions, together with ethical, legal and societal values. The vision of the project is to design Hybrid Intelligent systems, an approach to Artificial Intelligence that puts humans at the center, changing the course of the ongoing AI revolution.

The position has two key goals:
  • Contribute to shaping Hybrid Intelligence as an internationally recognised area of research. A key goal of this postdoc position is to scientifically investigate Hybrid Intelligence and contribute toward establishing it as a research field. Your role in the project will be to lead the effort to develop a methodology to identify the levels of hybrid intelligence, design the metrics or processes to measure or assess them, and create use-cases to demonstrate different levels.
  • Evaluate methods for developing Hybrid Intelligent Systems. The Hybrid Intelligence programme consists of many smaller projects that are researched by PhD candidates and postdocs to develop Hybrid Intelligence. It is our aim to be able to use the developed methodologies to evaluate how well these projects provide solutions for hybrid intelligence as well as establish synergies between them. In order to facilitate this, you will interact frequently with the consortium members.

These activities will include partaking in research meetings and the writing and contributing to co-authored papers.

  • You possess good communication skills and are able to work with people of different backgrounds.
  • You have demonstrated your ability to publish and present your work at international conferences.
  • You have an interest in formulating vision, roadmaps, and methodologies for developing and evaluating Hybrid Intelligence systems. Previous experience with meta-analysis research is a plus.

Conditions of employment

A better future for everyone. This ambition motivates our scientists in executing their leading research and inspiring teaching. At Utrecht University, the various disciplines collaborate intensively towards major strategic themes. Our focus is on Dynamics of Youth, Institutions for Open Societies, Life Sciences and Pathways to Sustainability. Sharing science, shaping tomorrow.

At the Faculty of Science there are six departments to make a fundamental connection with: Biology, Chemistry, Information and Computing Sciences, Mathematics, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Physics. Each of these is made up of distinct institutes that work together to focus on answering some of humanity’s most pressing challenges. More fundamental still are the individual research groups – the building blocks of our ambitious scientific projects.

The postdoc position will be based in the Department of Information and Computing Sciences. You will be part of the Responsible AI group, an international research group whose research focuses on designing and developing AI techniques, tools, and methodologies that enable computational systems to abide by legal, ethical, and social requirements while prioritizing humans that will benefit from them.

As member of the Hybrid Intelligence Center, you will be part of a dedicated group, called the Taskforce, which currently contains Pınar Yolum (UU), Davide Dell’Anna (UU), Davide Grossi (RUG), Catholijn Jonker (TU Delft), Pradeep Murukannaiah (TU Delft), Catharine Oertel (TU Delft), Bernd Dudzik (TU Delft). The Taskforce is at the heart of the Hybrid Intelligence Center consortium and has the ambition to deliver concrete hybrid intelligence outputs gathered from the broad range of running projects.
