Are you a proactive leader with a passion for advancing research on organ and disease models and infrastructure development? This function offers an exciting opportunity to shape the future of hDMT INFRA StemCells!

Job description

As Managing Director of hDMT INFRA, you will play a pivotal role in shaping the infrastructure and operations of our Service Centers of Expertise (SCEs). Your responsibilities will encompass various aspects crucial to the success and growth of hDMT INFRA StemCells.

Your primary task will involve establishing the infrastructure of hDMT INFRA, including the formation of the Central Hub team and management structure. This will require seamless integration and collaboration among SCEs located at LUMC, UMCU, and EMC, linking them to form a cohesive network. You will be tasked with identifying the services offered by SCEs and defining support portfolios and procedures to facilitate their operations. Developing uniform agreements between the Central Hub and individual SCEs will be essential to ensure clarity in responsibilities and finances. Additionally, you will oversee the development and maintenance of the hDMT INFRA website, ensuring it serves a central information point for capabilities, expertise, facilities, and open-access databases within hDMT INFRA StemCells, in adherence to FAIR data principles. On a day-to-day basis, you will be responsible for managing the operations of both the hDMT INFRA structure and Central Hub, ensuring efficiency and effectiveness in their functioning. As Chair of the hDMT INFRA Management Board, you will report operational matters and progress to the hDMT Boards.

Your role will also involve installing the Scientific Advisory Board and User Board to provide strategic guidance and user feedback. Actively promoting the use of hDMT INFRA and its SCEs among potential users will be crucial, as well as converting interest into contract-based assignments to support sustainability. Expansion of the infrastructure will be a key focus, and you will actively recruit additional SCEs and arrange corresponding agreements to enhance capabilities and services. You will also investigate funding opportunities to support SCEs and lobby for their sustainability.

In addition to infrastructure development, you will independently monitor the utility and quality of SCE services to ensure high standards are maintained. Supporting the organization of hands-on training and courses, including participant recruitment, will also be part of your remit to foster skill development and knowledge dissemination within the community.

Department

Organ-on-Chip consortium

Collaboration is the key word for hDMT, the Organ-on-Chip consortium in the Netherlands. hDMT is a multidisciplinary consortium of researchers from 17 public knowledge institutions (universities, university medical centers and universities of applied sciences), who share their knowledge, expertise and facilities to develop and apply Mini Organ-on-Chip models. They also collaborate with private organizations, such as companies and health funds.

To catalyze transfer of knowledge and innovation from the hDMT partner organizations to users of the technology, hDMT is establishing a Dutch Microphysiological Systems (MPS)/Organ-on-Chip (OoC) Infrastructure called hDMT INFRA: a new and unique national infrastructure of Service Centers of Expertise (SCEs) that is dedicated to making MPS/OoC technology available for users and ready for (end-user) applications.

For the hDMT INFRA StemCells project, funded by NWO (Large Scale Research Infrastructures), a unique and comprehensive infrastructure – accessible for the Dutch research community as well as the biotech and pharmaceutical industries – will be created that facilitates the use and development of highly innovative human organ and disease models for a variety of fundamental and applied research purposes.

You will be appointed at LUMC (Leiden) and seconded to hDMT. As hDMT is a virtual institute, your placement will involve being embedded into the iPSC & OoC Hotel at LUMC, a partner of hDMT, located in Leiden. Here, you will work within a vibrant research environment with a strong focus on the utilization of stem cells for the development of Organ-on-Chip (OoC) model systems. You will collaborate closely with a group of researchers dedicated to various projects within hDMT, including the hDMT INFRA StemCells project. Hybrid working arrangements are available, offering flexibility to accommodate your preferences.
