Published Deadline Location
15 May 2 Jun Amsterdam

Job description

Do you enjoy:
  • pursuing original research in the field of international law;
  • teaching international law to Bachelor and Master students with diverse backgrounds;
  • being part of a hardworking and collegial team of academics, representing a wide range of nationalities

Then the job of Assistant Professor International Law at the University of Amsterdam is perfect for you.

What are you going to do?
Together with the 25 team members of the section Public International Law you will coordinate and teach courses in the Bachelor Programme in Law (in Dutch), and in the LLM track Public International Law (in English). You enjoy the supervision of moot court teams, Clinic reports and/or Bachelor and Master theses, which would give you the opportunity for one-on-one exchange with students. Training is offered by the Amsterdam Law School to its teachers, which will allow you to reflect on your teaching and to further improve your pedagogical skills.

You will carry out independent and high-quality research that fits within the scope the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL). While your research will need to fit within the broad approach of the Amsterdam Center for International Law (ACIL), you can fully deploy your curiosity and creativeness in pursuing your own specific research interest. A minimum of 0.4 fte research time should allow you to engage in the international debate by publishing in journals as well as to apply for external research grants. With the support of the ACIL research director, you will develop a research plan and publication strategy with a long-term perspective. Support is also available within the research centre and the Law School for, among other things, the organization of workshops and the drafting of grant proposals.

With your enthusiasm for international law and your commitment to teaching and research, you will be part of our effort to shape the next generation of international lawyers. In the longer run, you will perform administrative and organizational tasks for the department and/or ACIL (e.g. participation in a programme committee, or the examination board). This multitasking makes an appeal on your organizational and time management skills as well as on your readiness for open dialogue with your colleagues and supervisors.

What do you have to offer?
  • A PhD in Public International Law or a closely related field/discipline;
  • You are strongly motivated to teach and to do research in the field of public international law; working across legal sub-disciplines and also in a multidisciplinary fashion is of interest to you;
  • You are able to initiate exchange and collaboration and want to contribute to our academic community;
  • teaching experience and excellent didactic qualities as evidenced by educational evaluations, where available;
  • Research output in the field of Public International Law - and/or a closely related field/discipline - in international journals and/or books;
  • An excellent command of both Dutch and English, both oral and written.

Our offer
The successful candidate will join a vibrant academic community, with appealing and successful research and educational programmes. The candidate will form part of the department of International and European Public Law and of the Amsterdam Centre for International Law (ACIL). The faculty’s relevant graduate and postgraduate programmes draw a diverse, interesting and interested student population from the Netherlands and abroad. ACIL has a strong track-record of excellent research and sustains a dynamic research culture through a series of events and initiatives.

We offer an employment contract for 18 months with the possibility of permanency after that. The preferred starting date is on 1 September or as early as possible after that. The probationary period is two months. The employment contract is for 38 hours a week. A parttime employment of minimally 0.8 fte (30,4 hours a week) is negotiable. Your salary, depending on your relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between €4,332 to €5,929 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8.3% year-end allowance. The Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU) is applicable.
