Job description

You will be working at the Philosophy department of the University of Amsterdam, more specifically with the Philosophy and Public Affairs group, a group that is responsible for the courses in ethics, political and social philosophy in the Bachelor and Master programmes in Philosophy.

What are you going to do?
For four years, you will contribute to the ethics and political philosophy curriculum of the PPA group, both in introductory and more advanced courses in the BA programme. This because several members of the staff are currently enjoying research grants, sabbaticals, or visiting positions abroad. You will give seminars, review papers, supervise theses, and grade exams. In this, you will be assisted by experienced members of staff, but a sufficient level of independence and experience is required. You will also participate in other group activities, such as attending talks and colloquia.

Tasks and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of the lecturer or senior lecturer, you will be teaching at Philosophy, which will include teaching in the field of Ethics, Social and Political Philosophy, as well as teaching more general subjects at the following degree programmes:
  • teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;
  • supervising Bachelor’s theses;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
  • marking assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions; with the final authority and responsibility residing with senior staff members
  • coordinating practical matters around your own teaching working group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • supervising BA theses and providing individual supervision to students (mentoring, coaching and supervising internships).

What do you have to offer?
We are looking for a highly motivated colleague with an MA (preferably ReMa) degree in Philosophy, with a demonstrable interest and expertise in practical philosophy (ethics and political philosophy). Ideally, you already have some experience with teaching and are interested in pursuing a (self-funded) PhD-track. You are confident yet eager to learn, communicative and stress resistant.

Your experience and profile:
Candidates need to have the following qualifications:
  • you have an MA degree in philosophy, specialized (MA thesis) in ethics or political philosophy;
  • you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language; sufficient to teach courses in Dutch;
  • you are able to teach in English.

What can we offer you?
We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 30.4 hours a week. The preferred starting date is 01 September 2024.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

What else do we offer?
  • excellent training and development opportunities, including participation in our Lecturer Development Programme and time reserved for professional development;
  • a position in which taking initiative and providing input are greatly appreciated;
  • attaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
  • the opportunity to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
  • an inspiring academic and international work environment in the heart of Amsterdam;
  • an enthusiastic, inspiring and professional academic team.
