Job description

We are looking for a Lecturer (D4) in the Linguistics program on a temporary contract for four years. You will be working at the Literary Studies and Linguistics department, more specifically in the Linguistics group, which comprises various chair groups responsible for the Bachelor Linguistics. You can find the full curriculum here: https://studiegids.uva.nl/xmlpages/page/2023-2024/zoek-opleiding/opleiding/7587.

What are you going to do?
You will be teaching in the BA Linguistics programme in which the field of linguistics is taught in its full breadth and also includes courses in which students learn a foreign language. The courses of the BA Linguistics programme that you will be teaching are related to phonology, phonetics and speech and language processing. Your educational duties will also include supervising theses.

Tasks and responsibilities:
Under the supervision of a more senior lecturer you will be teaching courses in the BA Linguistics programme that are centred in the field of phonology, phonetics and speech and language processing. Your tasks will furthermore include:
  • Teaching lectures, seminars and tutorials;
  • supervising Bachelor’s theses;
  • attending meetings and lectures, preparing for teaching, updating and translating course materials or assignments and selecting teaching methods, in consultation with colleagues and the senior lecturer;
  • marking (final) assignments, theses and papers, providing input on tests and test questions and entering marks;
  • coordinating practical matters around your own teaching group (such as handling administrative matters and communicating with students);
  • providing other individual supervision to students (tutoring, coaching and supervising internships).

What do you have to offer?
You enjoy teaching in the domain of phonology, phonetics and speech processing in a broader program. You are able to contribute to a broad and interdisciplinary programme and you are able to interact with colleagues from other (linguistic) sub-disciplines. You are an open communicator and able to reflect on feedback provided by students and colleagues. You are committed to facilitating an inclusive classroom.

Your experience and profile:
Candidates need to have the following qualifications:
  • you have an academic Master degree in a relevant discipline;
  • you have attained the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ). If you have not attained the UTQ you are required to start with the UTQ track upon commencement of your employment contract and obtain the certificate within three years of employment;
  • you are pedagogically/didactically competent (able to cater to students’ starting situation, to teach a curriculum that has already been developed, to supervise students and to make an active contribution in meetings with fellow lecturers);
  • you have a good command of the Dutch language. If you do not speak Dutch, we offer the opportunity to take and pass the state examination for Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
  • you are able to teach in English.

What can we offer you?
We offer temporary employment for a period of four years with a probationary period of two months. The employment contract is for 17 hours a week. Please note: in the year of the contract period from 1 August 2024 until July 2025 this will be 20 hours a week because of extra teaching activities due to temporary replacement of staff. The preferred starting date is 01 August 2024. If you wish, your contract can be increased if the department has more suitable teaching tasks to offer during the course of your appointment.

Your salary, depending on relevant experience on commencement of the employment contract, ranges between € 3,226 to € 5,090 gross per month on the basis of a full working week of 38 hours. This sum does not include the 8% holiday allowance and the 8,3% year-end allowance. Favourable tax agreements may apply to applicants moving from abroad. The Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities is applicable.

What else do we offer?
  • excellent training and development opportunities, including participation in our Lecturer Development Programme and time reserved for professional development;
  • a position in which taking initiative and providing input are greatly appreciated;
  • attaining the University Teaching Qualification (UTQ);
  • the opportunity to participate in the Dutch as a Second Language programme II;
  • an inspiring academic and international work environment in the heart of Amsterdam;
  • an enthusiastic, inspiring and professional academic team.
