The Graduate School of Communication (GSC) is looking for an enthusiastic, pro-active and involved new ombudsstudent who can intermediate between the students and Graduate School.

The GSC is responsible for the education within the Master’s in Communication Science (four tracks), the Research Master’s in Communication Science and the Erasmus Mundus Master’s in Journalism, Media and Globalisation at the University of Amsterdam.

What are you going to do
The ombudsstudents is someone who stands in the middle of UvA student life and is able to build good connections with fellow students.

You will issue both requested and unsolicited advice regarding student interests to the Graduate School management. You will gather student wishes and complaints and engage in discussions with study associations and the Faculty Student Council. Additionally, you will assemble and lead the group of student representatives.

Your role includes also participating in GSC meetings and being present during meetings of the Educational Committee (OC) and the Board of Studies. You will facilitate focus groups at the end of every semester in collaboration with policy advisers. Furthermore, you may assist the Graduate School organizationally or administratively with ad-hoc projects, such as alumni surveys, graduation ceremonies, career events, and introduction days.

What do you have to offer
A successful ombudsstudent handles complaints with empathy and neutrality, ensuring all parties feel heard and understood. Your communication is clear and concise, both in writing and verbally. You solve problems proactively, while handling sensitive information with confidentiality and integrity. You know when to follow through and to inform the right persons. You find the nuance in complex situations and engage actively with the student body. You seek continuous improvement through feedback and staying informed.

Your experience and profile
  • Ideally you start with the (Research) Master’s in Communication Science in September 2024 or you still have to study for a year within one of these programmes
  • You are involved in the (Research) Communication Science programme
  • You are dedicated to student interests and that of the programme
  • You are proactive and can work independently
  • You have strong organizational and time management skills with the ability to multitask and work under pressure (some weeks will be busier than others)
  • You have strong communication skills in Dutch and English

What can we offer you
The position concerns (temporary) employment of 8 hours per week. The initial employment is for one year. Following a positive assessment and barring altered circumstances.

Depending on your academic year, the salary will be between €2618 and €2846 gross per month based on a 38 hour working week, as per the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities.

We additionally offer an extensive package of secondary benefits, including 8% holiday allowance and a year-end bonus of 8.3%. The UvA offers excellent possibilities for further professional development and education.
