Job description

Your position
As a research software engineer / data steward, you will support researchers from the Tilburg School of Social and Behavioral Sciences with their research projects. You actively help them develop state-of-the-art software. This includes combining large datasets, creating analysis pipelines, creating web apps, and web scraping. You will work closely with the researchers and other support staff. You will work based on best practices in software development. This means that the code must be made reproducible and publicly accessible in line with the FAIR principles. In addition, you can work on issues related to High Performance Computing and AI.

Within the Research Support Team, you will provide a further quality boost to research within the School and unburden the researchers. You have two fellow Data Stewards within the team with whom you work closely. It is a close-knit and friendly team where customer focus is paramount. Moreover, you will be part of the university's research support network that is constantly working to apply the latest innovations in the field of digital research. There are various opportunities within the university and beyond to further develop your skills and immerse yourself in new developments.

Your qualifications
For this position, we are looking for someone with:

  •     An academic working and thinking level with affinity with the research of the school
  •     Demonstrable knowledge of software development with a focus on data processing, preferably in an academic environment (e.g. through a research master's or a PhD)
  •     Good knowledge of R, Python, Matlab, and best practices around developing (research) software
  •     Good command of the English language (CEFR level C1) 
  •     Customer-oriented and pro-active attitude

Conditions of employment

Our offer 
This is a position for 1.0 FTE (40 hours per week) of the full working time. 

The salary is a minimum of €3,226 and a maximum  of €5,090 gross per month for full-time employment, based on UFO profile Data Steward 3 and salary scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. Tilburg University uses a neutral remuneration system for grading that is based on relevant education and work experience.  

This is a vacancy for a structural position in accordance with Article 2.3(1) of the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities. You will receive a temporary employment contract for a period of 12 months. If you prove your suitability and continue in the same position, you will receive an employment contract for an indefinite period after this period. 

You are entitled to a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-year bonus of 8.3% of the gross annual income. If you work 40 hours a week, you will receive 41 vacation days per year.
