The Methods & Skills and Educational Sciences teams at Erasmus University Rotterdam seek applicants for a fully funded 6-year teaching/research position on the project Online education, under the supervision of Marloes Nederhand, Bjorn de Koning, Guus Smeets, and Lidia Arends.

In this unique position, you will combine teaching and research at both our Methods and Skills (M&S) and Educational Sciences (ES) teams. You will contribute to teaching and research. The teaching part will mainly consist of statistical courses (M&S) and thesis supervision (ES), with room to contribute to educational innovation with respect to online education. Your research will focus on how we can optimize online teaching.

The research involves taking stock of current approaches in online teaching and investigating how we can further improve this. The focus is on both enhancing the instructional design (e.g., how to design an educational video most effectively) and the collaboration of students in an online learning environment.

Your core tasks include:
  • Teaching statistics in both the bachelor and master program of Psychology and Pedagogical Sciences and supervising theses for i.a. Educational Sciences;
  • Performing both quantitative and qualitative research on effective online education;
  • Writing articles for an academic audience and presenting your findings at scientific and professional conferences;
  • Participating in relevant courses on teaching (e.g., UTQ) and research (e.g., participation in the EGSH and/or ICO graduate school, courses on quantitative and/or qualitative research);
  • Collaborating with researchers at the Erasmus University and presenting at the Community for Learning and Innovation;
  • There is a possibility to develop (open access) tools or knowledge clips for teachers who provide online education.

Requirements

Requirements:
  • A Master’s degree (a research master is preferred but not necessary) in Psychology (educational, cognitive or methods and statistics), Educational Sciences, or other Social Sciences in a direction related to the project;
  • Strong interest for teaching and supervision of students, particularly on topics regarding Methods and Statistics and Educational Psychology;
  • Demonstrable research skills, for example, evidenced by participation in research project and/or one or more publications;
  • In terms of research skills, the ideal candidate has experience with quantitative (and preferably also qualitative) research methods;
  • Strong social and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work individually and in a team;
  • Possession of organizational skills and/or demonstrable experience with project-based work;
  • Affinity with and preferably knowledge of (innovations in) education and online learning, particularly in the context of higher education (WO);
  • Excellent academic writing and speaking skills in both Dutch and English (C1 conform CEFR).

We offer you an internationally oriented and varied job in an enthusiastic team, with excellent working conditions in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU).

The start date of this position is 1 September 2024 and you will be based at the Erasmus School of Social and Behavioural Sciences (ESSB). This position is for 0.8 fte - 1 fte. The salary is dependent on your experience and knowledge and ranges from a minimum of € 3.226 to a maximum of € 5.090 gross per month, salary scale 10, on a fulltime basis (38 hours), in accordance with the CAO-NU. The temporary contract is for the duration of a period of 6 years.

Department of Psychology, Education and Child Studies (DPECS)

Our department consists of 6 teams covering the disciplines of Psychology, Educational Sciences and Pedagogical Sciences; three closely related disciplines with each their own profile. The different psychological specialization areas of DPECS focus on understanding cognitive, physical, and social functioning and well-being in the context of mental health, education, and work. The educational sciences focus on issues regarding effectiveness and inclusion in primary, secondary and tertiary education. The pedagogical sciences focus on issues related to everyday as well as problematic development and upbringing within families, at school and in youth care. The disciplinary perspectives of DPECS complement each other and share the mission to generate societal impact with high-quality scientifical research on timely societal issues, and with the use of innovative methods and techniques and open science. Team Methods & Skills (M&S)

Our interdisciplinary team focuses on scientific research and education in relation to research methods, statistics, and promoting professional and academic skills of students within the behavioural sciences. With our research, our team contributes to the disclosure of innovative and state-of-the-art research methods, such as analysis methods for (intensive) longitudinal data, big data, and quantitative and qualitative measurement research. Our applied research into education has a direct link to practice and contributes to evidence-informed educational improvements. Within DPECS, our team is responsible for the methods and techniques education and for training in professional skills (conversation, diagnostics) and academic skills (scientific writing).

Team Educational Sciences
With our interdisciplinary team of Educational Psychologists and Educational Scientists, we focus on developing theory and practical applications regarding effective, innovative, and inclusive environments for lifelong learning. We aim to identify the cognitive and psychosocial processes that contribute to effective learning and how this knowledge can be applied in the design of innovative and effective learning environments and instructions. Our team is responsible for teaching in the bachelor programs Psychology and Pedagogical Sciences, and the master specializations Educational Sciences, Educational Psychology, Psychology of the Digital Media, and the Educational Master in Primary Education. We prioritize creating societal impact through our research and education, actively bridging the gap between science and practice.
