The MRI group of the departments of Biomedical Engineering & Physics and Radiology & Nuclear Medicine is hiring a PhD-student to develop advanced MRI techniques for imaging skeletal muscle trauma. Over the past decade the two departments have established an active collaboration in the field of musculoskeletal imaging. The PhD project involves the development and optimization of skeletal muscle Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) for detection of micro trauma in athletes after hamstring injury and to translate this technique from a proof of concept setting towards clinical application. Fast imaging acquisition strategies will be developed to improve scan sensitivity and reduce scan times, which includes image acquisition and reconstruction. In addition, advanced data-analysis tool need to be developed to quantify these diffusion parameters in a robust and automated way.

We are looking for a candidate with an MSc degree in Biomedical Engineering, Biomedical Sciences, Physics or similar and with a keen interest in applying advanced techniques in medical research. We are looking for a positively minded scientist with verbal and written skills in English, motivated to learn new approaches and ready to work hard to build a scientific career. Knowledge and experience in pulse programming, reconstruction and post processing of MRI data is desirable, but not an exclusive requirement.

The PhD project will be jointly supervised by experts in medical imaging (Prof. G. Strijkers, Dr. A. Nederveen, M. Hooijmans) as well as by clinical experts in the field of sports-related injury (prof. M. Maas, Dr. J. Tol).
