Job description

The prevalence of obesity has increased worldwide and is associated with major health problems such as type II diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Metabolic homeostasis is regulated differently between males and females. Sex steroid hormones are major factors that can explain this sex dimorphism, as they contribute to sex differences in body fat distribution and insulin sensitivity. High androgen levels in women (for example in polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and low androgen levels in men (for example in late-onset hypogonadism) both lead to obesity and increased risk of diabetes. The drop in estrogen levels in women entering menopause is considered the driving factor for the significant increased risk of obesity in postmenopausal women. The current research project aims at understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying the sex-specific effects of sex steroid hormones in obesity. The project will combine in vitro and in vivo experiments using mouse models and in vitro experiments using human adipocyte cultures.
