Collaboration between residents' groups

Job description

The post-doctoral researcher will conduct desk and field research in an NWO-funded action-research project. The project aims to follow the process of collaboration between residents' groups that aim to form a housing cooperative (wooncooperatie) and their respective housing associations in the Amsterdam area. The research will apply a mix of qualitative research techniques, including observation, in-depth interviews, and facilitated group discussions. Findings will be discussed in a series of multi-stakeholder workshops. The project includes the organisation of one international seminar with invited practitioners and researchers from abroad to learn from similar experiences from other contexts. The post-doctoral researcher is expected to assist in the organisation of these workshops and seminars.

Requirements

The researcher should have a PhD in social or spatial sciences and an MSc in Architecture, Sociology, Human/Urban Geography, or a related discipline. Proven interest in the topic of the study through perviously conducted research in the field of housing management and/or collective self-organisation will be an advantage for the selection of the candidate. Experience and/or knowledge of qualitative research techniques is highly desirable. The post-doctoral researcher is ideally a native Dutch speaker (or with a proven advanced level of Dutch) and should also have excellent communication and writing skills in English. Post-docs with some research/field work experience after their PhD are also invited to consider this position.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 1 year.

Architecture

The Department of Management in the Built Environment (MBE) provides education and performs scientific research in the management of the built environment. MBE helps to meet the growing demand for building engineers with the necessary knowledge and skills relating to the management aspects of the initiation, development, and design of the built environment. The department has an annual MSc student intake of about 80.

The Housing section studies the development of supply and demand on the residential real estate market. The chair of Housing Management focuses on investment decisions made by actors on the housing market (households, housing associations, developers, investors, construction companies, and municipalities) and the way in which they organise themselves to adapt housing to changing demand and societal challenges.
