Job description

We are pleased to invite applications for a position as lecturer/tutor in academic communication within the team Communication in Science (CIS) at Leiden University Medical Centre. CIS provides instruction and training in scientific writing and presentation skills to students of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences at bachelor’s, master’s and PhD levels in both English and Dutch. Communication is a valued and important component of courses provided by the Faculty of Medicine and students of the LUMC are expected to graduate with very high levels of competence in academic communication. Teachers within the CIS team teach students of all levels, contribute to the development of new teaching material and to the organization of the curriculum. Teaching forms include lectures, small group sessions, individual tuition and digital instruction.

Requirements

You are an experienced teacher of academic communication skills in both Dutch and English. You have enthusiasm for education and demonstrable didactic skills. You are able to motivate students and you have an excellent level of English. Ideally you have an affinity with science writing. You have a background in Academic Communication Skills, Applied Linguistics, or Rhetoric/Argumentation. You are a team player and possess the flexibility to work comfortably in a dynamic, complex working environment. Further, you have strong personal communication skills, good organizational skills and you have a sense of humour. You hold a Certificate in Basic Education (BKO) or are prepared to obtain certification within two years with assistance from the LUMC.

Conditions of employment

The position is for 3 days per week (0.6 FTE). As a new addition to the team, you will first be offered a contract for the duration of one year with a future option for permanent employment. The salary depends on your qualifications and experience with a maximum of € 4,216 gross per month based on a full time position (scale 10 of the Collective Labour Agreement for University Hospitals).

The Communication in Science programme is based in the Center for innovation in medical education (Onderwijs Expertise Centrum). This department is situated within the Directorate of Education (DOO), and consists of a group of education specialists in communication (Communication in Science), E-learning (ICT&O), teacher professionalization and education development.
