As Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) at the chair of Smart Architectural Technologies you will have a variety of organizational responsibilities:You will be in charge of the implementation and coordination of (new) research activities in our multidisciplinary field.You will take up a central position in the collaborations with different chairs at TU/e and external industry partners.You will assist in building up a leading international position for the chair. You will assist in acquiring external research funding and will (co-)manage externally funded research projects.
Besides, organizational responsibilities, you will be responsible for the (co-)supervision of PhD, PDEng- and Master students. Finally, you will be motivating and teaching students and will have the freedom to develop new courses. Training and coaching is provided for the Assistant Professor to accomplish all this.
Smart Architectural Technologies
Smart Technologies are attracting growing attention to provide an answer to contemporary societal challenges by increasing the quality of the building, health conditions and wellbeing of occupants, as well as decreasing building costs and the environmental burden. However, the development and application of these emerging technologies in the design and construction of the built environment require a radically new consideration of architectural design.
Two main focus areas are distinguished within the research ambition of the chair: 'smart architecture' (verified methods for exploring the means of integration of technology in architecture), and 'humanized architecture' (frameworks for developing novel typologies and evaluating the impact of smart architecture). Our challenge is to develop evidence-based design methods for future proof housing typologies that respond adequately to the needs of the occupant with affective empathy; an environment that 'feels' what users need and enables them. Advanced technologies, such as IoT and robotics, play a key role in this process.
The research field offers novel possibilities for collaborations at departmental, university, national and international levels. Two examples of ongoing interfaculty collaborations are our research project on 'House as the carer' with the Chair 'Mixed-Signal Micro-Electronics' (Faculty of Electrical Engineering), and the research project 'House as a robot' in collaboration with the chair of Control Systems Technology (Faculty of Mechanical Engineering). To sharply define the questions, we are currently collaborating with industry partners to validate results in seven Living Labs throughout the Netherlands.
Departmental Research Themes and University Strategic Areas
TU/e's Department of the Built Environment is an interesting employer of international stature. Within the full range of research and design-related activities of the department, the unit Architectural and Urban Design and Engineering (AUDE) focusses on spatial design with an inevitable technical fundament. The chair of Smart Architectural Technologies, as a part of AUDE-Unit, strives to substantially contribute to the goals of the unit-wide research program 'Living Cities'. Contemporary design and smart building technology require a coherent and complimentary profile.
The multidisciplinary character of the field of Smart Architectural Technologies provides a natural embedment in the three research themes of the Department of the Built Environment, which are Quality of Life (quality of building structures and health of constructions workers is improved), Smart Living Environment (architecture becomes more empathic), and Sustainable Transformation (smart architectural interventions can be applied to transform buildings from a human-centred perspective). In addition, the strategic areas of the TU/e are covered, which are Mobility (applying smart technologies such as domotics and robotics in neighbourhoods improve quality of life of the inhabitants), Health (occupants' health is maintained /improved) and Energy (smart and circular design solutions and construction techniques require less energy).

We offer a temporary appointment for five years in a 'development track'. The development track can lead to a permanent appointment with the prospect of becoming associate professor. This provides young and talented scientists with the opportunity to grow into an internationally acknowledged academic. Based upon performance indicators agreed upon at the start of your appointment, a decision will be made in the final year whether or not to offer you a permanent position.
We offer support to your professional and personal development. You will be enrolled into a program to acquire the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) within 3 years. Furthermore, you will have the opportunity to participate in the
training Academic Leadership for Assistant Professors.
Gross monthly salaries are in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement of Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Salary is based on knowledge and experience and is at least € 3475 up to a max. of € 4757 gross per month (salary scale 11, CAO NU) at a fulltime appointment; plus 8% holiday allowance and 8,3% end-of-year allowance. Besides that the TU/e provides an attractive package of fringe benefits (including excellent work facilities, child care and excellent sport facilities).
