We invite applications for the PhD position entitled: 'Economic perspectives of the use of insects to promote health of soil, plants and animals. This research will be carried out within the NWO financed project entitled 'Closing the loop: exploiting sustainable insect production to improve soil, crop and animal health'
This PhD project will utilize technological information on the prospects for the use of insects and their rest-streams to promote the health of soil, plants and animals. The prospective candidate will investigate the economic perspectives of the use of the insect rest-stream and the main insect stream and assess farmer willingness to adopt their use. Objective of the project is to analyse the economic feasibility and the potential for adoption of the use of insects and their rest-streams to promote health of soil, plants and animals, by farmers by: (1) assessing costs and benefits for farmers of using insects to promote soil, plant and animal health, and (2) assessing which social-psychological constructs drive farmers' intention to use insects and their rest-streams to promote soil, plant and animal health.
This multi-disciplinary research will combine economics and social-psychological theories with knowledge of the use of insects and rest streams of insect production.

For this PhD position we are looking for an enthusiastic result-driven candidate with an MSc degree in either (1) economics (agricultural economics, quantitative economics), social-psychology or (3) agricultural sciences with a proven interest in social sciences. Analytical abilities and collaborative skills are required and good communication skills and proficiency in English (both oral and written) are a prerequisite.

In principle this is a 48 month PhD position. We offer you a temporary contract for 18 months which will be extended with 30 months if you perform well. Salary will increase from € 2222 gross per month in the first year up to € 2840 in the last year, based on a full-time appointment (38 hours a week). In addition, we offer a holiday allowance of 8% and an end-of-the-year bonus of 8.3% of your annual salary.

The PhD project will take place within the Business Economics (BEC) group and will be jointly supervised by the Laboratory of Entomology of Wageningen University. BEC holds a strong position in interdisciplinary research with key areas, such as food supply chain economics, bio-economic modelling, and economics of animal health, food safety and plant health. Also, BEC is active in measuring and modelling performance and risk management of agro-supply chains and farms. Research is commissioned and funded by the Dutch government, the EU, non-governmental organisations, food processors, wholesalers, feed companies, pharmaceutical companies as well as banks, insurance companies and agricultural accountants.
