You will be based at the Centre for Science and Technology Studies (CWTS) and, working closely with STIS (Science, Technology and Innovation Studies) members and other CWTS colleagues, you will participate in qualitative and quantitative research projects – both ‘basic’ curiosity-driven research and ‘applied’ contract research for external clients.  Your tasks will include analyzing and documenting existing data sets and preparing new data sets. Your work package also includes reviewing scientific literature, preparing analytical and summative papers, writing up results of your research in reports and academic publications. Helping to organize and contributing to CWTS public seminars, meetings, dissemination events and international conferences is also part of your job.
The research activities will relate to one or more STIS projects, which covers a wide range of topics including: innovative universities, public-private R&D cooperation, science-innovation ecosystems, academic entrepreneurship, and science in Africa. The position may offer the opportunity to develop and pursue your own research ideas and interests, as a PhD student on a STIS-related research topic and under supervision of senior CWTS staff.

• Preference will be given to candidates without a PhD degree, those with advanced IT skills (e.g. SQL, programming skills, web scraping, text mining) and some familiarity with STIS-related research topics or ‘big data’ science and technology studies;
• Candidates should hold a research master degree (or functional equivalent), preferably in Studies of Science and Technology (STS), Innovation Studies, Library and Information Science, Economics or Management. Those with a background in another field should be able to demonstrate relevant knowledge or expertise;
• We expect candidates to have good or excellent writing and verbal skills in English. In addition to proficiency in English, fluency in Dutch is considered an important asset, but not a condition. Employees who are not functionally fluent in Dutch will be expected to become so over time.

We offer a one year term position, with the possibility of renewal based on need, funding and performance. The preferred start date in June 1st 2018. Salary range from €2,588 to €4,084 gross per month (pay scale 10), in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities).
