Job description

The Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) at Tilburg University currently accepts applications for the Ronald Coase Visiting Professorship in Law and Economics for the academic year 2018-19. We invite applications from experienced scholars of academic distinction, who will conduct research of high quality while in residence at TILEC. Both legal scholars and economists working in one (or a combination) of the TILEC research areas, including competition policy, innovation, the regulation of network industries, industrial organization, or institutional economics, are welcome to apply.

 

In principle, the Ronald Coase Visiting Professor is a tenured professor at a distinguished university with a genuine interest in interdisciplinary work. During the duration of the professorship he/she shall spend a minimum of two months on campus. The Ronald Coase Visiting Professor will be offered office space and is expected to actively participate in TILEC activities and interact with the TILEC community. He/she will produce at least one paper to be submitted to the TILEC discussion paper series. Depending on the curriculum needs at Tilburg University and the availability of the chairholder, a short seminar on his or her topic of expertise shall be organized for the benefit of TILEC PhD students.

 

The Ronald Coase Visiting Professorship is embedded within TILEC and the Tilburg Law School (TLS). It will allow the chosen candidate to devote him- or herself to the execution of his or her research program in a stimulating environment. The professorship also offers an opportunity for building a lasting relationship with TILEC with a view to fostering excellence and dialogue in global interdisciplinary scholarship, following Professor Coase’s example.

Requirements

The suitable candidate will:

  • Be holder of a doctorate in law and/or in economics with proven knowledge of and/or interest in the other discipline; or have otherwise demonstrated academic achievements and interest for interdisciplinary work;
  • Enjoy an international reputation in her or his field, as evidenced by top publications, visiting professorships, invited lectures, and/or scholarly prizes;
  • Have a clearly defined research project  while in residence at TILEC;
  • Be willing to engage with colleagues and fellow researchers at TILEC on a variety of law and economics topics, and to take part in TILEC activities such as conferences or workshops during the duration of his or her stay;
  • Be capable of stimulating and guiding the research of others, including PhD students;
  • Have an excellent command of English.

Tilburg University is an equal-opportunity employer. The Ronald Coase Visiting Professorship is neither a paid nor a permanent position. A budget of maximum €15,000 will be available to cover expenses such as travelling costs, accommodation, or research expenses. Fellows must make their own arrangements (housing, insurance, childcare, transportation) but TILEC offers assistance in arranging these. Office space and access to the Tilburg University library and electronic databases will be provided.

The Tilburg Law and Economics Center (TILEC) is a Center of Excellence at Tilburg University, the biggest of its kind in Europe, delivering first-rate interdisciplinary research on the governance of economic activity. TILEC is a vibrant research center created jointly by the Tilburg Law School (TLS) and the Tilburg School of Economics and Management (TiSEM) in 2003 and now gathering some 40 committed members from the two schools. Over time, TILEC’s research has been sponsored by Dutch regulatory authorities, the European Commission, think tanks and major international companies. Professor Ronald Coase (1910-2013), the late Nobel Memorial Prize Laureate in Economic Sciences (1991), honored TILEC in 2008 by giving his consent to the establishment of a chair in Law and Economics named after him at Tilburg University. In the period 2012-2017, TILEC’s work has focused on the execution of its research program, evolving around 6 cluster areas: institutions and incentives; competition policy; innovation; health care markets regulation; regulation of network industries; and finance, trade and investment. The current research interests of TILEC members include the interlinkages between institutions, innovation, competition and regulation.
