The Faculty of Science and Technology

Mission statement of the Faculty

To provide excellent education in a selected number of academic programs, encompassing disciplines in Science and Technology, as well as from the area of Health to perform cutting edge and societally relevant research in selected fields connected with these educational programs.

The faculty of Science and Technology is a robust organization that engages in educational programs with a disciplinary character, such as Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering, and multidisciplinary educational programs like Advanced Technology, Nanotechnology, and Biomedical Engineering. The relation to the domain of Health has been strengthened by the development of the Technical Medicine program about 15 years ago and the recent transfer of the Health Sciences program. Most research groups have their origin in the traditional Applied Physics and Chemical Engineering disciplines but a number of them have adopted a more multidisciplinary character. Most groups are positioned in the MESA+ Institute for Nanotechnology or the TechMed Institute for Health and Biomedical Technology.

A recent organizational development is the formation of 13 clusters. Clusters are formed by research groups with an overarching research team, such as physics of fluids, applied nanophotonics, membrane science and technology, and medical imaging. The faculty is proud to have impact and is internationally recognized. Moreover, the faculty is proud of the quality of its education (all the six bachelor-programs ended up as Nr. 1 in their category in the 2018 issue of the “Keuzegids”). This pride is combined with a deeply felt desire to contribute to good causes: to support young people in their professional and personal development, to understand the intricacies of nature, and to develop technologies that contribute to improvements for people and for the world. A drive to high quality is part of the university’s culture.
