The Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology (MaCSBio) aims to integrate biological data from different empirical domains using multi-scale modelling and machine learning approaches. One of MaCSBio’s research lines focusses on Systems Medicine of Chronic Diseases, with the aim of developing more personalized preventive strategies for obesity-related chronic diseases, such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease or cancer.
In this research line, biological expertise on metabolism, metabolic gene regulation and chronic diseases is combined with a broad spectrum of modelling approaches such as dynamic models, network- and pathway biology, and machine learning and statistical inference. Because of MaCSBio’s position as an interfaculty institute we have access to state-of-the-art clinical, laboratory, and imaging infrastructure to generate human experimental data.
We invite applications for an Assistant or Associate Professor (tenure-track) to strengthen our ongoing research and teaching activities in the field of metabolic modelling. We are looking for an ambitious researcher with experience in dynamic (ODE) models (of glucose metabolism), model fitting and parameter estimation, genome-scale metabolic models (GEMs), and/or integration of omics data into GEMs.
The successful candidate is expected to acquire externally funded research projects, lead and participate in multidisciplinary research teams, participate in teaching in educational programmes including the 2-year master programme in Systems Biology, and pursue strategies to translate research results into innovation.
Our ideal candidate has:
a PhD degree in systems biology, computational biology, metabolic modelling, or a related field;
an excellent track record in scientific publications, and depending on your career age, in the acquisition and management of externally funded research projects;
a clear view on required future developments, aiming at a high degree of sustainability in the application field;
experience in teaching and supervision of PhD candidates and MSc students;
a personality characterized by collaboration, vision, and ambition;
fluency in the English language.
Initially, candidates are employed on a temporary contract as assistant professor (level 2) and agree to specific development goals. Five years into the appointment, candidates will be evaluated and if the development goals have been met, promoted to assistant professor (level 1) on a permanent contract. The evaluation can be brought forward if criteria are met earlier. On the candidate’s request the evaluation can be deferred in case of special personal circumstances, such as pregnancy leave, parental leave or chronic illness.
Salary is competitive, depending on qualifications and work experience. The salary will be set in scale 11 of the Collective Labour Agreement of the Dutch Universities, with an expected minimum of € 3.475,--and a maximum of € 4.757,-- (depending on the years of experience) for a full-time position of 38 hours/week. In addition there is an 8% holiday and 8.3% year-end allowance. Non-Dutch applicants may be eligible for favourable tax treatment (’30 %’rule).
If you bring experience in the field as a full position assistant professor with an extensive track record an associate position may be considered with corresponding salary up to scale 13 (max €5.861- gross per month).
Maastricht University requires teaching staff to have the University Teaching Qualification (BKO) or acquire this qualification preferably within the first year.

The Maastricht Centre for Systems Biology (MaCSBio) is one of the youngest research centres of Maastricht University. It is an interfaculty research institute which is part of the Faculty of Science and Engineering (FSE), the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience (FPN), and the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Science (FHML). MaCSBio strives to perform cutting edge research in the interdisciplinary field of Systems Biology, combining biology and state-of-art technology for the acquisition of biological data with advanced mathematical and computational methods. Research projects at MaCSBio focus on human, multiscale modelling within two complementary research lines tackling areas that are highly relevant for society: ‘Systems Medicine of Chronic Diseases’ and ‘Computational Biology of Neural and Genetic Systems’. We are rapidly building up our systems biology research and, where possible, expanding to new empirical domains. In addition to the postdocs and PhD-candidates currently working at MaCSBio, we aim to train a new generation of systems biology researchers by offering courses in several Bachelor programmes and a Master programme in Systems Biology.
