Job description

The Institute of Cultural Anthropology Development Sociology (CA-OS) is looking for a PhD candidate who will be doing research in the project Sustainability Transformations in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining: A Multi-Actor and Trans-Regional Perspective.
The candidate will develop a research project, which will consider a transformative approach to sustainability in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining. Empirical research will be conducted in Uganda. This PhD position will be in the context of NORFACE-funded research project, which takes a trans-continental and transnational approach to sustainability tracking between South America, West Africa and East Africa (https://www.norface.net/project/st-asgm-sustainability-transformations-in-artisanal-and-small-scale-gold-mining-a-multi-actor-and-trans-regional-perspective/). The PhD candidate will be supervised by Professor Peter Pels and Dr Sabine Luning. Graduation will take place in the Faculty of Social  and Behavioural Sciences.

Requirements

  • Completed Master degree in anthropology and/or sociology, with excellent grades and demonstrated research interest in sustainability and/or extractivism and Sub-Saharan Africa;
  • Excellent writing and presentation skills in English;
  • Demonstrated research experience;
  • Ability and willingness to carry out empirical research and stay for extended periods in Uganda;
  • Keen interest in interdisciplinary social scientific research methods and approaches, including participatory research.

Conditions of employment

The appointment as a PhD student will be for a period of four years (initially for a period of one year with an extension of three years after positive evaluation of progress and skills development) leading to the successful completion of a PhD thesis. The appointment will be under the terms of the CAO (Collective Labour Agreement) of Dutch Universities. The gross monthly salary is set on €2,222 in the first year, increasing to €2,840 gross per month in the final year.
