In this Tenure Track position, you will play a significant part in pursuing the Chair's mission to develop academic insights, theoretical frameworks, practical tools and fundamental principles and increase the level of professionalism of public construction clients. This will stimulate the resilience of the commissioning role of public construction organizations and support them in meeting the demand develivering public services that secure a high performing, flexible, sustainable and circular built environment.

In collaboration with the Design and Construction Management group your focus will be on developing and applying scientific knowledge related to public management and administration, governance structures, management of innovation and change, public procurement, public private collaboration, and project governance. During the tenure period you will continue to build your personal academic profile, with respect to the international scientific community and the several communities of practice in the construction industry. To this end, you will:

• publish in authoritative international journals

• play a role in international conferences and networks

• collaborate with the professional community in developing applications of your academic findings

• initiate and co-author proposals for research grants and funding

• co-ordinate and execute research programmes and projects

• be responsible for particular courses, educational tasks and coordinating parts of the BSc and MSc programmes within the Faculty of Architecture.

Applicants should have a PhD degree obtained at an internationally recognised institution, with research skills in the fields related to organisational science, public administration, construction management, public procurement - as demonstrated in academic peer-reviewed publications, as well as experience in teaching academic courses and supervising graduation students and PhD’s. Knowledge of public private collaboration, procurement, and or the construction industry (real estate or infrastructure) is highly valued, and a personal – demonstrated – interest in these issues is prerequisite. Experience with case based research, engaged scholarship and reflective practice is highly appreciated. The applicant should also be able to show management and administrative skills required for the position and preferably already has experience at Assistant Professor level as well as demonstrated competence in written and spoken English and the willingness to learn Dutch.     

Fixed-term contract: Tenure Track.

At the start of the tenure-track you will be appointed as Assistant Professor for the duration of six years. Head of the Chair, section and department leader and you will agree upon expected performance and (soft) skills. You will receive formal feedback on performance and skills during annual assessment meetings and the mid-term evaluation. If the performance and skills are evaluated positively at the end of the tenure track, you will be appointed in a permanent Assistant Professor position.

The Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment (A+BE) of Delft University of Technology is looking for an assistant or associate professor in the interdisciplinary field on the public client organizations and or public procurement in construction. The faculty’s excellent facilities highlight its internationally renowned position in architecture and building sciences, offering an interdisciplinary setting for its 500 employees and 3.000 students. The faculty generates ideas, solutions, and knowledge for and with all relevant industries in pursuit of a sustainable, resilient and enabling built environment.

The Faculty of A+BE strives to make significant contributions to solving some of the world’s most pressing societal problems such as sustainable housing, circular  and quality of the public space. This is done by conducting  research in relation to the built environment, and by providing Bachelor’s, Master’s and PhD programs to students from all over the world. The Department of Management in the Built Environment (MBE) is a specialist in the areas of real estate management, design and construction management, housing and urban development. MBE develops knowledge and skills to manage the design, planning, and (re)development processes in the built environment.

Chair of Public Commissioning in Construction

The Chair of Public Commissioning in Construction forms part of the Design and Construction Management (DCM) group of the MBE department. The Chair of Public Commissioning focuses on the organizational development and professionalisation of the client organisation in the construction process. This field specifically studies the interplay between semi-public and public commissioning organisations and private parties in the construction industry. Focus lies with the redevelopment, realization, maintenance and management of public real estate, social housing and public infrastructure and covers topics such as organizational change, organizational maturity, public leadership, public procurement, innovation management, public private collaboration and project management.

Activities of the chair include conducting multidisciplinairy research in close collaboration with practice, actively transferring knowledge and providing education about the role of the client in the construction process on BSc, MSc and post graduate level.

The research programme combines the fields of construction management and public procurement with organisation science and public administration and consists of three thematic lines:

-              Safeguarding public values in commissioning

-              Public private collaboration in construction

-              Governance structures for public commissioning
