Are you interested in complex governance issues, such as how to safeguard public goals of quality, efficiency and affordability in a largely private healthcare system? Would you like to combine academic debate and study, with hands-on experience in a public organization where decisions are prepared that directly affect people’s access to good care? Would you like to contribute to the scientific foundation of these important decisions and make sure that they lead to better outcomes for the citizens of our country? Then you might be exactly the candidate we are looking for.

The PhD Candidate will be involved in research on role and position of the National Health Care Institute (Zorginstituut Nederland) in relation to that private actors in Dutch health care. The research will focus on health technology assessment and value-based healthcare, and on the relation between the two. The overarching research question is: (How) can the National Health Care Institute, as a national public agency, ensure that public goals regarding quality and efficiency of care play a role in private actors´ decisions regarding the local or regional organization of care, and regarding treatment options of individual patients? The PhD Candidate will also spend 20% of his or her time on teaching, mainly in the master programs of the Department (masters Healthcare Management, and Health Economics, Policy and Law).

Requirements

The successful candidate should hold a Masters Degree in social science. Preferably, the candidate should have experience in using qualitative research methods. It is essential to master the Dutch language.

Fixed-term contract: PhD students are appointed for a period of 4 years, starting with a temporary contract for 1.5 years followed by a second temporary contract for 2.5 years.

We offer a position as PhD student at EUR. PhD students are appointed for a period of 4 years, starting with a temporary contract for 1.5 years followed by a second temporary contract for 2.5 years. Remuneration will be in accordance with the PhD scale set by the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO NU). Fulltime work will pay € 2.222.- per month gross in the first year, increasing up to € 2.840.-  in the fourth year. Fulltime is considered to be 38 hours per week. EUR offers a set end-of-year bonus of 8.3% and there are generous opportunities for additional education.

Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM)
Erasmus School of Health Policy & Management (ESHPM) is part of Erasmus University Rotterdam and is responsible for a bachelor and four master programs on policy and management in healthcare, which serve 1000 students. In addition, research is being done on three major research themes: ‘competition and regulation in healthcare’, ‘quality and efficiency in healthcare’ and ‘healthcare management’. ESHPM has about 175 employees. The position offered is within the Healthcare Governance Group.

The Healthcare Governance Group

 

The Healthcare Governance Group studies the new roles, position and identities of practitioners, patients and regulators, and how they interact and steer healthcare. Through projects as well as strategic partnerships the group engages with practitioners and regulators to understand governance ‘from within’. The group is specialized in ethnographic and discursive research methods. The leading researchers – Roland Bal, Antoinette de Bont, Pauline Meurs, Kim Putters – all have extensive networks in healthcare practice and in academia, both nationally and internationally. In addition, strategic partnerships with the Dutch Healthcare Inspectorate (with a leading role for Ian Leistikow), the National Health Care Institute (through Diana Delnoij) and the Association of directors in healthcare (Richard Janssen) give the group a strong footing in Dutch healthcare practice.
