Job description

The project - A web interface for high-performance cloud-computing software

The project aim is to develop a web interface (web app) for MercuryDPM (www.mercurydpm.org), an open-source software primarily developed at the UT and commercialised via MercuryLab. MercuryDPM is a high-performance tool to simulate and optimise industrial bulk processes, such as mixers, silos, conveyors, or 3D printers. The software can be employed on powerful cloud-computing platforms, allowing customers to access the software without buying expensive hardware i.e. via a software as a service business model.

We are looking for a PDEng trainee to design a new web interface (app) for this software. The software should allow industrial users to run, visualise, and analyse simulations, and thus to test and optimise their machinery in a virtual environment instead of using costly and time-consuming physical prototypes. For this position you should have some experience in programming (in-particular web programming) such as PHP, Javascript, Java, MySQL, CSS, HTML5, C++, Python, etc.

You will learn how to develop virtual prototypes of large-scale machinery, including how to calibrate material models, transfer physical designs into a virtual environment (geometry of the material, in- and outflow, surface characteristics, control elements), and how to analyse simulation data such that it can be compared with macroscopic physical quantities. Further, you will become familiar with optimising machinery design (setup parameterisation, design of experiments, and optimisation techniques). On the programming side, you will learn how to develop a user-friendly and easily extendable interface for complex scientific applications. We will provide you with a robust scientific training and exposure to both academic and business environments. This will equip you with the multidisciplinary and transferable skills needed to develop high-level, creative software for designing and optimising complex industrial machinery.
