Job description

African Studies is understood here as a division of area studies involved in social sciences and humanities research on Africa; it can include, but is not limited to, projects dealing with, Politics and Governance in Africa, Citizenship and Identities in Africa, Inclusive development in Africa, Religion in Contemporary Africa and its Diaspora, Governance of Finance and Integrity in Africa, and African History. Students will be supervised by ASCL staff within the graduate programme of the ASCL.

Key responsibilities

  • Conduct original research and disseminate preliminary results through appropriate channels (conferences, journals, project website, etc.);
  • Undertake relevant coursework and other training;
  • Write a PhD dissertation;
  • Contribute to teaching for up to 15% of overall work time, probably concentrated in years 2-3;
  • Participate in ASCL PhD program activities.

Requirements

  • A Master’s degree or equivalent in African Studies or a Master’s degree in other disciplines with a specialization that clearly indicates specialist academic knowledge with regard to Africa;
  • An excellent command of English;
  • Excellent academic skills, visible in MA thesis or other written work;
  • Teaching experience will be an added asset;
  • The ability to work independently, and as part of a team.

Conditions of employment

We offer a, 38 hours per week, position starting as from 1 January 2019. The initial appointment will be for one year, with extension for the remaining three years conditional upon good progress. Upon consultation with the board of ASCL it is possible to take up the position as a 0,8 FTE position (30,4 hours per week) for five years. Salary range, depending on education and work experience, from €2.266 to max. €2897 (pay scale P in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities) gross per month, based on a fulltime appointment.

The African Studies Centre Leiden

The www.ascleiden.nl/ is the only multidisciplinary academic knowledge institute in the Netherlands devoted entirely to the study of Africa. It has an extensive library that is open to the general public. The ASCL is an interfaculty institute of Leiden University.
The PhD students will be based in the ASCL. The institute is committed to a present-day vision of area studies, integrating disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives on a solid foundation of excellent language skills.
