Job description

The principle responsibilities of the Assistant Professor will be to contribute to our research program (with a particular focus on Social Inequalities), to contribute to our educational program within the Department of Public Administration and Sociology, and to contribute to the faculty’s strategy, specifically by helping set up the new Master’s track Social Inequalities.

We are looking for a scholar in the field of sociology with a demonstrated interest in theoretical and methodological perspectives to understanding the antecedents and consequences of social inequality. Your research will contribute to social scientific debates around how microlevel (family environment), mesolevel (organisational culture and practices) and macrolevel (educational systems, welfare regimes) mitigate, sustain or strengthen social inequalities.

You will develop, supervise and carry out high-quality research in collaboration with your own international network, as well as with colleagues at the Department of Public Administration and Sociology. You will also publish regularly in leading international academic journals. Over the medium term, you will be supported to develop an individual research grant application to either the Dutch Innovational Research Incentives Scheme or the European Research Council.

You will contribute to an internationally oriented teaching programme at Erasmus University Rotterdam. In the short term, you will be expected to develop a new introductory Master course on social inequalities. Furthermore, you will be expected to adapt existing courses that will be used for the newly developed Sociology master track Social Inequalities. Over the long term, opportunities will emerge to contribute to the design and policy of our Master and Bachelor programme.

The candidate:

- performs teaching tasks in the DPAS educational programmes such as coordinating/teaching modules and supervising theses. Including, but not necessarily limited to, modules and theses of the English taught Master’s track Social Inequalties;
- conducts research within the Department of Public Administration and Sociology, preferably within the Family Sociology chair group (headed by Prof. dr. Renske Keizer) which investigates the role of family environment and family practices in the development of social inequalities;
- contributes to the faculty’s strategy, principally by helping launch the new Master’s track Social Inequalities, but perhaps also by working on other strategic goals, such as those regarding lifelong learning;   
- The candidate preferably adds expertise on the antecedents and consequences of social inequalities, and shows interest in/adds knowledge to the wider domain of Sociology and Public Administration.

Requirements

We are looking for a highly motivated scholar:

General:

  • With a completed PhD thesis in sociology, or another relevant social science;

  • With a keen interest in cross-disciplinary research and collaboration;

  • Who is fluent in written and spoken English (at a minimum level of C1, according to the Common European Framework – and preferably C2), both oral and written;

  • With excellent communicative skills, proactive and independent work attitude;

  • With a great curiosity and enthusiasm for scientific research.

Teaching:

  • Who has an excellent teaching record and proven teaching skills;

  • Who has basic competencies in course and curriculum development;

  • Who preferably has a vision on/experience with international content, international learning outcomes and/or intercultural skills;

  • Who has demonstrated ability to inspire and supervise BSc, MSc and PhD students;

  • Who has demonstrated experience and affinity with delivering high quality education at both BSc and MSc levels;

  • Who has a teaching certificate (BKO), or is willing to obtain this;

Research:

  • Who has good knowledge of sociology in general and in-depth knowledge of stratification sociology/the literature on social inequality, as proven by previous academic activities and publications in international journals;

  • Who has a strong publishing record in peer reviewed international academic literature;

  • Who has demonstrated interest or ability to work in an interdisciplinary research environment;

Acquisition:

  • Who has the qualities to apply for competitive grants and to collaborate with stakeholders;

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

We offer

Internationally-oriented and varied work within an enthusiastic team, with attractive fringe benefits in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU). Your initial employment term will be for four years (temporary contract for four years), the trial period is two months. Employment starts preferably no later than January 1st 2019.

Salary is subject to know-how and experience and corresponds to scale 11 CAO NU, which is between € 3.637 and € 4.978 gross per month on a full-time basis (38 hour per week; 1.0 fte).

Erasmus University Rotterdam offers attractive terms of employment, including a holiday allowance of 8%, a year-end payment of 8.3% and 41 annual leave days in case of a full work week.
