Job description

Are you interested in high-end technological design? Then the Professional Doctorate in Engineering (PDEng) programme Energy & Process Technology is something for you! The PDEng programme is a 2-year post MSc technological programme with a focus on technological design. This programme at the University of Twente contains an educational part that will be followed at the University (~50%), and a design project (~50%) that will be carried out at the research institute “ECN part of TNO” in Petten NL. The educational programme will have an in-depth and broadening character with ample attention for professional development and will be partly tailored to the design project. In collaboration with “ECN part of TNO”, high level, creative and new designs for complex issues will be aimed at.

PDEng Design Project

Wind energy is the fastest growing form of sustainable energy production and will continue to be very important in the energy transition in the coming decades. The continued growth of wind energy presents enormous technical, industrial and political challenges, especially in the storage of wind power during high production or low electricity consumption. Onsite production of hydrogen can be used for a variety of applications, including as transportation fuel and for generating electricity by using fuel cells or internal-combustion engine generators. “ECN part of TNO” is working on the integration of electrolysers in wind farms or wind turbines.

The goal of this project is the system design of the integration of electrolysers and wind power. Different technical requirements will be addressed, such as wind turbine functional characteristics and physical limitations, installation of the electrolyser, Operations and Maintenance, and health and safety. Economic aspects also play a role, such as CAPEX and OPEX assessment revenues from electricity and hydrogen delivery. At the end the system will be optimized based on sizing, control strategies, integration of power-electronics, manufacturing and maintenance, hydrogen storage and transport, etc.

An alternative application could be the integration with a Photo-Voltaic system.

The PdEng candidate will perform the assignment (mainly) at the location of “ECN part of TNO” in Petten as part of the electrolyser development team, and at the site of their industrial partner.
