Are you interested in critically analysing and dissecting contemporary conditions? We are looking for three PhD candidates in Sociology for the EnGendering Europe’s Muslim Question research project, which is funded by the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NOW). This PhD track is part of the 'Political Sociology: Power, Place, and Difference', which is of the programme groups of the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR), and is located in the Faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences, Department of Sociology.
Project descriptionEnGendering Europe’s Muslim Question is a larger research project that investigates the frameworks, patterns, and dynamics through which Muslims and Islam in Europe are problematized. The project at large consists of both conceptual and empirical work. A description of the research project can be requested from the PI. The original research project includes case-studies about the rejection of violence against women, the toleration of homosexuality, and gender segregation, and is situated in The Netherlands, Belgium, France, and Germany. The candidates are expected to develop their PhD project within the confines of this broader framework but there will be a degree of flexibility to incorporate your specific interests. Please note: this is not a research project about Muslims and Islam in Europe, but about how powerful frames are (re)produced.
