You are responsible for the special UL collections. In that capacity, you have a meaningful role in achieving the heritage agenda: better accessibility and an intensive use of the special collections within our education and research; digitization is key in this respect. Are you motivated to contribute to policy proposals on the digital and physical presentation of our UL special collections?

The position is within our department of Special Collections.

In this job, you will:
• promote differentiated and innovative use of physical and digital collections by researchers, students, and the general public
• chip in to increase the digital accessibility of the collections (visibility, accessibility, and indexation)
• compose and extend, curate and preserve physical and digital collections, among which the launching, evaluation and monitoring of (digital) conservation and restauration proposals
• take ownership in special collections projects
• publish about and present manuscripts, printed texts, book history, and developments in the area in professional contexts, and
• cooperate with faculties and partner institutes at a local, national, and international level.

Requirements

You have:
• an academic degree, preferably a PhD in a relevant subject
• the ability to play a pivotal role in the promotion of the special collections, both within and outside the University
• excellent communication and consultancy skills
• an affinity with topics such as, book science, cartography, heritage studies, digital humanities and archive and library science
• a broad network in academia (national and international) and in cultural circles
• scholarly knowledge and skills in relevant areas
• preferably, knowledge of the digitization and physical publication of special collections
• good fluency in English and Dutch, both oral and written (or the willingness to improve Dutch)
• preferably, experience with conservation and preservation of special collections, and
• preferably, knowledge of bibliographical indexing methods and systems for special collections, and
• preferably, comprehension of Latin.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 24 months.

We offer a salary ranging from a minimum of €3,637 up to a maximum of €4,978 for a full-time position, depending on experience (Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities, scale 11). The appointment is initially for a period of two years. A performance appraisal will take place after 18 months, and if favourable and you are considered suitable, you will be offered an appointment for an indefinite period. This job is according to the Job Classification System for universities in the Netherlands (UFO). The UFO profile of this position is Scientific Information Specialist 1.

Commencement of employment 1 September 2019.
