We are currently seeking to appoint a talented PhD candidate in mathematics education. The successful candidate will be highly motivated, hard working, open to feedback and eager to contribute to, and benefit from, the research culture of ISEC.

We offer you opportunities for an in-depth study of current research and theory in mathematics education, especially in areas of mathematics teaching and learning. Through a structured programme of study, you will develop your ability to think independently and pursue your own ideas within the scope of the project “Mathematics teaching practice and students’ mathematical meaning-making at university level”.

The project focuses on research investigations of the activity of teaching mathematics and its development for students’ mathematical meaning making. The goal of the project is to explore historically, socially, culturally and materially shaped practices of the teacher and the students and to understand how knowledge for teaching mathematics develops in relation to those. You will study the practical manifestations of teaching mathematics (e.g., calculus, analysis, linear algebra) in observational and other data that you will gather in university classes. Examples of research domains of the project include, but are not limited to, development of teaching practices, teaching knowledge, tools and semiotics, affect and emotions, classroom interaction and discourse, resources, agency and identity, etc.

The PhD programme will also offer you opportunities to develop your teaching skills by contributing to basic undergraduate mathematics courses (calculus, linear algebra) or graduate programmes (Master’s in Science Education and Communication). You can receive teacher training and a personal budget for additional training and career activities.

You should have:
- a bachelor’s degree in Mathematics
- a recently completed master’s degree in Educational sciences, Mathematics Education or similar
- excellent English language skills with proof in line with the requirements of the Graduate School of Science and Engineering
- excellent organizational, communication and collaboration skills
- strong conceptual thinking, proactive and independent work attitude
- flexibility to work in an interdisciplinary and international environment.
The following can be considered as advantages:
- experience in data analysis (using software such as NVivo, ATLAS.ti, SPSS, MPlus)
- experience in teaching mathematics
- Dutch proficiency.

Fixed-term contract: 12 months.

We offer, in accordance with the Collective Labour Agreement for Dutch Universities
- a salary of € 2,325 gross per month for a full-time working week in the first year, up to a maximum of € 2,972 gross per month in the fourth and final year
- a full-time position (1.0 FTE)
- a holiday allowance of 8% gross annual income
- an 8.3% end-of-the-year allowance
- the position has a duration to a period of 4 years.

A PhD training programme is part of the agreement and you enrol in the Graduate School of Science and Engineering. First, you will get a temporary position of one year with the option of renewal for another three years. Prolongation of the contract is contingent on sufficient progress in the first year to indicate that you will successfully complete your PhD thesis within the next three years.

The preferred starting date is September 2019 or earlier.
