Job description

The position

The Amsterdam Institute for Global Health and Development (AIGHD) is hiring a General Manager. Reporting to the Chair of the Executive Board of Directors and participating in the Executive Board, the individual is a key member of the Operational Management Team and a bold, strategic thinker. Applying leadership and people management skills, the individual manages the overall daily operations of AIGHD.

Specifically, the General Manager is responsible for a wide variety of key tasks including budgeting, partnerships and ensuring the smooth operation of day-to-day management of the organization. As an organization with a complex, international network of stakeholders which includes academic institutes, funding agencies and NGOs, the successful candidate’s flexible and pragmatic approach is vital for success.

The individual’s result-oriented approach and ability to motivate a workforce will guide our organization in building and maintaining relationships with partners, increasing staff engagement, strategically ensure financial sustainability and achieving our strategic targets. As part of this diverse portfolio, the individual must be able to make swift, informed decisions in consultation with the (chair of) executive board on behalf of the organization while maintaining a high level of professionalism in all situations. Candidates should have strong leadership and interpersonal skills, with a proven ability to work across cultures while effectively negotiating positive business outcomes.

Main areas of responsibilities and tasks:

Implementing strategy and direction
 

  • Advise the Executive Board on setting the overall strategic direction of AIGHD
  • Planning and implementing long-term business strategies to achieve the organization’s objectives

Building and leading the team

  • Liaise and build trusting relationships with AIGHD staff, Executive Board & Supervisory Board and an (inter)national network of stakeholders including AMC Finance, Legal and Business Development Support (IXA), NGOs, funding agencies and project partners
  • Interview for senior positions within the organization and oversee the hiring process for all staff
  • Foster the organizations’ culture and values
  • Delegate responsibilities and supervise the work of direct reports by guiding and coaching the operational team.


Allocating budget and reporting on finances

  • Oversee the financial performance including planning, grants/funding for projects and other business ventures
  • Set the organization’s budget and forecasts alongside the Executive Board and regularly report on status
  • Look for opportunities to increase efficiencies and speed up processes across the organization
  • Evaluate and decide upon key investments in equipment, infrastructure and talent
  • Oversee contract and legal management

Daily management

  • Develop and implement targeted goals and objectives
  • Ensure overall delivery and quality support to affiliates and partners
  • Implement policies and legal guidelines and ensure compliance among team members
  • Identify and solve problems to maintain business and operations

Requirements

  • Experience in senior management position in an international environment (min 5 years)
  • Experience working in either an academic or scientific research organization, preferably with a focus on global health
  • Academic educational level
  • Experienced in financial budgeting, planning and annual reporting, having a strong financial acumen
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, in Dutch and English
  • Experienced in contract management
  • Ability to inspire and coach the team members
  • Effective (project) management skills and delegation
  • Effective decision making
