Job description

Maastro has five research divisions: Clinical Data Science, Physics Research, Clinical Research, Lab, and Innovation Research. The division of Innovation Research, led by Prof. dr. Maria Jacobs, conducts research into how the implementation of innovations in healthcare, and more specifically radiotherapy, can be improved and accelerated.

In this position you will work in the Innovation Research division and conduct research to the best project management method for the successful implementation of innovation projects in a radiotherapy setting. There are many different methods for project management, such as PRINCE-2 and AGILE/SCRUM. With your research you will answer the following research questions using literature studies but also research in practice:

  • Which factors determine the choice and success of a particular project management method?
  • Is there a relationship between the type of innovation (e.g. treatment innovations, technological or organizational innovation) and the method of project management?
  • What preconditions must be met to successfully lead a project?
  • Is there a relationship between the method of project management method and different types of innovations?
  • How can we objectively quantify factors that determine the choice of a project management method or link them to the successful implementation of a project?

With your research, you will generate knowledge to help healthcare institutions implement innovations more successfully and quickly. You will publish your research results in peer reviewed scientific journals. A supervisory team is available to guide you and your research.




We are looking for an enthusiastic, proactive candidate with either a completed relevant Master's degree and experience in conducting scientific research, or a PhD in the field of Health Sciences, Business Administration or similar.

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: initial period of 1 year.

  • An employment contract at Maastro for an average of 36 hours per week and an initial period of one year, based on the CLA Hospitals; an extension is possible. 
  • Depending on relevant work experience, a salary based on FWG 50 (min. € 2,759, max. € 3,922) or FWG 60 (min. € 3,389, max. € 4,964) and other excellent benefits, such as an 8.33% vacation allowance, 8.33% year-end bonus, good pension provision and attractive discount schemes for various (health) insurance policies, bicycle purchase and sports subscriptions;

The internationally acclaimed state-of-the-art radiotherapy institute Maastro in Maastricht delivers cancer care in the Limburg region of the Netherlands, aiming to cure patients while preventing side effects of the provided treatments.

With about 350 employees, we contribute to this endeavor in patient care, research, and business operations. We are one of three centers in the Netherlands treating cancer patients with proton therapy. Furthermore, we have well-established research groups and work closely with Maastricht University and Maastricht University Hospital (MUMC+) in education, clinical and preclinical research.
