Job description

We offer a full-time appointment as a Bioinformatician / Data scientist at the Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention (MMI) department. The main task of the position is to set up/facilitate, perform and supervise complex analyses for the above-mentioned questions in the context of diagnostics, epidemiology, business intelligence and scientific research. This includes setting up/designing sequence analysis pipelines, accessing data (using SQL and/or other common systems), maintaining existing Bio-IT tools, filtering, matching and restructuring data, drawing up reports and creating dashboards. Other tasks include assisting with other ICT-related matters such as serving as an information resource for ICT issues and providing ad-hoc ICT solutions when needed. The tasks will be diverse but translational in nature, aiming to automate new applications for patient care and process results for improving future diagnostics.

You will work closely with the MMI staff, including Medical Molecular Microbiologists and medical specialists in the field of microbiology and infectious diseases.

The Bioinformatician/Data Scientist supports the department by writing database queries, exporting, and analyzing data to answer questions related to diagnostics, epidemiology, business intelligence, and scientific research. Therefore, the data scientist will collaborate with colleagues from all disciplines of the MMI department.

The tasks are at an academic level, and there will be opportunities for (co)authoring scientific publications.

Requirements

  • Post-HBO / academic working and thinking level
  • Affinity with the field of infectious diseases / medical microbiology
  • Knowledge of the data structures (and the microbiological process)
  • Proficient in R and other job-specific statistical knowledge, Spotfire and powerBI
  • Programming skills
  • Creativity in finding solutions
  • Important competencies are stress resistance, flexibility, good communication skills (written and oral) and focus on cooperation.
  • Enthusiastic team player, but also able to function independently

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 3 years. Permanent employment thereafter is envisaged.

This concerns a temporary employment contract for 3 years for an average of 36 hours per week in accordance with article 2.4.4 Cao umc. Permanent employment thereafter is envisaged.

In addition to various research laboratories, the Department of Medical Microbiology, Infectious Diseases and Infection Prevention of MUMC+ comprises 3 diagnostic laboratories:

  1. bacteriology,
  2. infection serology and
  3. molecular diagnostics.

In total, MMI has more than 100 employees, including physicians, medical molecular microbiologists, researchers, lab technicians, infection prevention experts and a diverse group of employees in support roles. Due to the digitization of work processes and the availability of techniques such as Next generation sequencing, the department generates large amounts of data, including laboratory test results, logging of performed steps in the diagnostic process and raw data (including sequencing) that require complex further analysis to obtain a result.
