Job description

What you will do

  • You will be one of three PhD candidates part of the DEMAND project, a collaboration of three UASs and a number of industrial and public partner organisations, with a focus on creating a toolbox supporting data availability and quality;
  • You will spend three days a week (0,6 FTE) preparing and carrying out PhD research in collaboration with the Data Science dept. of Radboud University (Nijmegen);
  • If you choose to do so, you can also spend an additional 1-2 days doing further, related project activities, or teach in our Master Applied Data Science (Arnhem);
  • You will be part of the Data & Knowledge Engineering section of the interdisciplinary practice-oriented research team in the HAN UAS Academy of IT and Mediadesign.

Requirements

What we expect of you

  • You have a recent Bachelor’s degree in, or including, text-oriented Data Science (e.g. Text Mining), AI, Computer Science, Computational Linguistics, or similar;
  • You are proficient enough in hands-on text-oriented data science techniques to semi-independently develop advanced working prototypes as part of your PhD research;
  • You have basic knowledge of and a strong interest in applied concept-oriented subjects like data management, knowledge engineering, applied ontology, conceptual modelling, domain modelling, etc.
  • You have a strong drive to do a PhD in an emphatically applied research context, and in collaboration with industrial and public partner organizations;
  • You have a pro-active attitude and work well in a team;
  • You are proficient in Dutch and/or English (for the latter, CEFR C1 level).

Conditions of employment

Fixed-term contract: 4 years.

What we offer you                                                                                                                   

  • An interesting position as a PhD candidate in a dynamic applied sciences environment as part of an ambitious research programme;
  • A temporary contract for a period of one year. After which a possible extension will follow for the duration of the PhD research;
  • A position as a Junior Researcher, for 0.8-1.0 FTE (depending on your preference);
  • Your gross monthly salary will be € 5.019,73 max (cao-hbo schaal 10) based on a full-time assignment;
  • 8% holiday bonus (vakantietoeslag) and a 13th month (8,3%)
  • Good secundary employment benefits, including pension insurance (ABP), collective health insurance, (paid) parental leave, and a generous number of days off;
  • Possibilities to do follow courses on various subjects, both academic (also at Radboud University or as part of the national SIKS Research School) and professional (HAN).
